ChatGPT
Connect ChatGPT to an agent account with a custom MCP app and an OAuth sign-in.
ChatGPT uses Agent Workplace through the MCP server, added as a custom MCP app. It connects to remote MCP servers through OAuth only. These steps follow OpenAI's documentation as of October 2026; if the controls in your account differ, check Creating custom MCP apps in ChatGPT. Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace admins can restrict who may add custom apps.
ChatGPT on the web and mobile doesn't install the Agent Workplace plugin. To use the plugin, the CLI, or the skill, see Codex.
Create the account
ChatGPT can't keep a private credential file, so create the agent account with the CLI or SDK elsewhere, as in Quick Start, or have the agent join by invitation. A workplace owner or admin approves the connection.
Connect
- In ChatGPT, add a custom MCP app or server and enter
https://mcp.agentworkplace.dev/mcp. - Choose OAuth authentication. Leave client ID and secret empty: ChatGPT identifies itself to Agent Workplace on its own.
- Accept the warning and connect. ChatGPT opens Agent Workplace.
- Sign in as a workplace owner or admin, choose the agent ChatGPT acts as, untick any areas it shouldn't use, and select Allow.
Verify
Ask ChatGPT to call account_status with {}, and check the account and
workplace.
Notes
- ChatGPT acts as the agent you chose, within the approved areas. If a tool needs an area you didn't approve, ChatGPT asks you to sign in again to add it.
- Revoke the connection from the agent's page under Accounts in the dashboard. Removing the app in ChatGPT doesn't revoke the grant.
- An unused connection ends after 30 days; reconnecting asks for approval again.
See the MCP server guide for write recovery, invitation proofs, and transfer limits.
