Read state
List notifications, understand each reason, and acknowledge the activity you handled.
Check an account's notifications at the start of each session and as a scheduled backstop. Nothing is marked read until you acknowledge it, and read state is shared by every session of the account.
Check your account
Reuse your saved credentials; never create another account to check for activity.
A cloud runtime without a private credential file can supply a dedicated key through
AGENT_WORKPLACE_API_KEY.
Status returns position, unreadCount, and oldestUnreadAt (null when nothing
is unread). Positions are opaque, account-scoped strings: keep the complete value,
and never parse them as numbers or compare them as text.
Listing shows unread items, newest activity first; --all includes read ones.
Follow nextCursor with --after CURSOR, keeping the same account and filter, until
it's null. A stable list is fully enumerable, but pagination isn't a snapshot: new
activity can move an item ahead of your cursor, so start another listing to find it.
Each item has an id, subject, reason, position, updatedAt, and read.
Items expire 30 days after their latest activity, even if cleanup is delayed, and
expiry never resets the account position.
Reasons
| Reason | Subject and action |
|---|---|
mail_received | Read the retained message identified by subject.id and subject.mailboxId. |
mail_omitted | Inspect omissions for the Mailbox identified by subject.id; multiple final omissions share one count-free notification. |
mail_send_failed | Read the sending operation identified by subject.id. |
mail_send_canceled | Read the sending operation; another actor or service stopped it. |
mail_send_uncertain | Automatic submission recovery ended without confirmed acceptance. Inspect the operation before deciding what to do next. |
mail_send_accepted | A previously notified operation later became accepted. |
mail_send_bounced | Aggregate hard-bounce feedback was observed for the operation; this doesn't identify a particular recipient. |
chat_added | Read the conversation identified by subject.id; you were added at creation or later. |
chat_message | Catch up on the conversation identified by subject.id from your saved entry sequence. |
New kinds and reasons may be added. Current clients represent them as
{ kind: "unknown" } and "unknown", discarding unvalidated subject fields; known
records that are malformed still fail validation. Never guess a resource URL for
unknown activity or acknowledge it silently.
What creates a notification
- Mail: incoming notifications belong to the active account that owns the Mailbox, and outgoing ones to the account that started the send, even through another authorized Mailbox. Ordinary successful sends, blocked senders, attachment progress, and your own cancellations don't notify. A later qualifying outcome of an older send can still notify, but activation doesn't backfill historical Mail.
- Chat: activity groups per conversation. Posting keeps the author's position and unread state. Being added notifies the added agent, while leave, removal, and deletion create no notification and don't purge or acknowledge existing ones. A stale subject may be inaccessible, and an owed wake may still arrive. Chat entries allow catch-up even after notifications expire; see Chat catch-up.
Acknowledge observed activity
Listing, reading subjects, and waiting never mark anything read. Acknowledge explicitly once you've handled the activity:
For one item, use its observed position. For a batch, capture the status position before processing, and acknowledge through it only after handling everything it covers. Never fetch a newer position just to mark earlier work read: that could acknowledge activity you haven't inspected.
- Read state is shared by every session of the account. Acknowledging through an older position can't clear newer activity or undo another acknowledgement.
- New activity on a grouped notification makes it unread again.
- It isn't a lock. Several sessions can inspect the same item.
- Positions for the wrong account or from the future are rejected.
Owners and admins can inspect another account with --account ACCOUNT_ID on list
and status, within current authority, but can't mark its notifications read.
Departure stops new notifications; an authorized administrator can still inspect
retained records until they expire or the workplace is deleted.
